The capital of Moravia, Brno, lies almost on the half way between Prague, Vienna and Budapest which enables to Brno to serve as starting point for the visits of these three European capitals.

Brno is also the administrative and cultural metropolis of Southern Moravia. According to the numerous excavations the territory of the city Brno was settled already in the prehistoric times. During the period of the Great Moravian Empire it was an important village centre. In 1243 King Wenceslas I bestowed the privileges of a royal town on Brno – the right to build city walls, manage law and order and to run an annual market. First castle was built in Brno during the rule of Premyslides (Přemyslovci) in the 11th century and at that time it was the seat of marquises of Moravian march. The oldest temple in Brno is the Cathedral of SS Peter and Paul. In the Cistercian Monastery with the Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary we can find there the oldest altar screen in the Czech Republic with the picture of Virgin Mary. Another of Brno most outstanding features is Špilberk, originally early gothic castle rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries as a monumental baroque fortress. Among other medieval constructions belong the House of Lords of Lipá (Dům pánů z Lipé), House of Lords of Kunštát (Dům pánů z Kunštátu) and the Old City Hall. In Brno you can also admire a lot of Art Nouveau Houses built at about the 19th century, for example the famous villa of the architect Dušan Jurkovič. And we can´t forget mention the buildings of funcionalist architects Arnošt Wiesner and Bohuslav Fuchs hailed from Brno, as well as the beautiful villa Tugendhat (since 2003 protected by UNESCO) built in 1930 by the German functionalist architect Mies van der Rohe.
